Mental Health Community Focuses on Hope for a Brighter Future

The Sixth Annual “Journey of Hope” Community Mental Health Awards Luncheon, hosted by Federation of Organizations,  provided a forum for advocates, clients, professionals and politicians to discuss current progress and future ideas for the treatment of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness. The event, held at Russo’s on the Bay on October 17th,  was sponsored by Josephine & Michael Valletta, J&M Management of Nassau Corp.

Long time supporter, Senator Frank Padavan, member of the Senate Committee on Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities, spoke of the lead that the state of New York has taken in providing necessary services for those recovering from Mental Illness. He further added that the achievements made thus far must not be eroded because of budgetary concerns.

The Keynote Speaker at the event was Michael Hogan, Ph.D., Commissioner of the New York State Office of Mental Health who said “Optimism is rational”. The theme of hope resonated with those in attendance. The Commissioner sighted studies which have proven scientifically that hope has a significant role to play in the recovery of individuals. These studies have shown that hope is a critical ingredient in the development of positive relationships which can aid people on their journey to mental health.
