P.O.W.E.R. (PEER OUTREACH WITH EVENING RECREATION)

The P.O.W.E.R. Program uses a peer support, self-help concept to assist those in recovery from mental illness, while also struggling with homelessness or chronic housing difficulties.  This is done through the use of outreach into the community.  Staff provides direct on street outreach to the surrounding communities in attempts to locate those in need of services.  Staff provides food and clothing to those in the community, including blankets and coats during the colder months.

The services offered by the P.O.W.E.R. Program include an Evening Social held weekly, where staff and volunteers work to provide a meal as well as supportive groups, all in a safe and comfortable environment.  The P.O.W.E.R. Program provides referral services to assist the client in getting linked with the services they need.  Informal peer counseling and support is offered to assist those in crisis.

Housing assistance is also provided.  The P.O.W.E.R. Program has resources on different types of housing including housing specifically for those recovering from mental illness.  The program has an on-site food pantry.  This pantry serves those in need within the community by supplying nutritional foods to individuals and families.  A weekly Double Recovery Group provides on-site drug and alcohol prevention and education for those recovering from mental illness and substance abuse.  An on-site certified substance abuse counselor is also available.  The P.O.W.E.R. Program provides assistance to individuals in securing benefits and entitlements, such as S.S.I., S.S.D., Food Stamps, etc.  The program also has an Employment Counselor on staff to assist individuals looking for employment.
