Federation Salutes Martin Langer

After dedicating 47 years of his life to providing for the needs of the disabled, Marty Langer is retiring. Marty began his career in mental health in 1961 as an attendant at Rockland State Hospital (now known as Rockland Psychiatric Center). While spending his days working with patients and staff, he spent his evenings attending night school for college and graduate school; he utilized both his practical and his classroom education as the foundation for his career. 

Dedicated to the improvement of patient care, Marty ultimately became associate director of Rockland Psychiatric Center. He was also an integral part of CSEA, including serving for more than two decades as its public policy specialist, providing New York State’s largest public employee union with guidance in the areas of mental health and mental retardation and serving as an advisor to all of CSEA’s statewide presidents. In addition, he served as executive director of Rockland Hospital Guild’s CLUE, an innovative housing program. Throughout his career, Marty was mentored by Irving and Irene Berkowitz, renowned statewide advocates for excellence in services for people with mental illness. 

Everyone at Federation is grateful for all Marty has done to support and advance the cause of those with mental illness. We wish him joy and peace in his retirement.
