COMPANION PROGRAM
The Companion Program provides meaningful and rewarding volunteer opportunities for people who are in recovery from mental illness. Through the principles of peer support and self-help, Companions strive to improve the quality of life for other individuals of mental health services. We believe that people with common life experiences can be mutually supportive and through shared activities help each other to reach goals and foster increased self-worth. Companions provide social and recreational activities, peer support, and friendship to people living in adult homes, nursing facilities as well as people who attend social programs and other community sites.
Adults over 18 who are recovering from mental illness are eligible to become Companions. The program gives people in recovery the opportunity to explore vocational goals and make positive contributions by working at community sites. Companions receive travel reimbursement, meal allowances, and paid benefit days.
