Federation employs people recovering from mental illness as advocates who are paid an hourly wage. They work within the Suffolk County mental health system, including the discharge planning and psychiatric units of community hospitals. Advocates are available to assist people in obtaining entitlements, including Medicaid and social security benefits. They offer counseling and concrete assistance to people who believe they are victims of discrimination due to mental illness.
